What is AirSnort
AirSnort is a wireless LAN (WLAN) tool which recovers encryption keys for certain wireless networks. It mainly targets 802.11b networks, but also works with Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) and TKIP/RC4 when using external tools like aircrack-ng or reaver.
Downloading and Installing the Tools
For starters, you’ll need to download a couple of tools: aircrack-ng and WinPcap. The aircrack-ng suite is a collection of tools used for WEP/WPA cracking. WinPcap is a packet capture library that you’ll need in order to use airodump-ng and other programs found in aircrack-ng. To download these two utilities, go here.
The first step in installing airsnort is to run Wireshark. After launching Wireshark, you will see a screen similar to Figure 11-4. Choose your wireless adapter from the drop-down menu, as shown in Figure 11-5. If there is no option for your wireless adapter, you might have not loaded your drivers correctly. You can go back and try again or consult Microsoft’s help system for assistance with loading your drivers.
aircrack-ng suite is used for WEP and WPA cracking process. This application was used along with Kali Linux in order to capture a wireless network’s data. In many cases, it was an ideal solution for cracking most of other networks. It also gives you ability to learn new techniques so that you can apply them in your professional life as well.
