Design things that come naturally
There are certain types of design that just seem to come naturally for some people. If you’re one of these people, go for it! If you’re not, and you don’t have time to become one of these people, maybe hire someone who is. The key here is designing things that are best suited for your strengths—if you love art but can’t produce it well enough for a mobile app launch, find an artist whose work fits your project.
Use gradient masks
Gradient masks work just like regular masking tools in PS except that they let you add gradual transparency to images. To add a gradient mask, create a new layer and choose Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal All. Then go to Image > Apply Image and select an image or photo of your choice as well as an option for Repeat Edge Pixels.

Working with layouts
A layout is a collection of settings which determine how your user interface (UI) will look. You can make some basic changes to your phone’s UI, such as adding or removing icons from your dock, but for a more custom look, you can create new layouts with alternate wallpapers and home screen settings.
Editing the layout
The most important thing in your Photoshop tool box is what you see before you’ve even started work on a new layout. You’ll find several palettes that allow you to change everything from font size and color to graphics and pictures. The following section covers each of these palettes in detail.
Designing in canvas
If you’re wondering why we chose to use HTML5 canvas instead of Flash for our graphics in The Weather Channel, there are a few reasons. First and foremost, it offers superior performance—canvas allows us to perform animations at 60 frames per second, which is significantly faster than what Flash can offer on mobile devices. Second, it’s part of native code and fits perfectly with our overall design philosophy.
Preview your design
An impressive and professional mobile app starts with a brilliant design. We know how crucial it is to keep up-to-date with ever-changing user interface trends, which is why we have developed LGVelvetGFX tool, that enables you to see your designed graphics on an actual device before actually releasing them for circulation.
