According to The Verge, users can react to messages with one of five emoji by tapping on the message and then tapping on the emoji you want to use in the subsequent window that appears above the keyboard. Once you tap on an emoji, it sends along with your reply; there’s no option to undo or change your reaction later if you pick the wrong one. WhatsApp Rolls Out Emoji Reactions
What are they?
Emojis are little digital images that can be used to express emotions, convey feelings, or add some character to text messages. They’re a fun way to spice up a conversation and make it more engaging, and now WhatsApp is implementing them into its chat app too. WhatsApp recently added the ability for users to attach GIFs as reactions for messages within chats. Now, in an Android beta version of its app only available in India at present, WhatsApp is rolling out emoji reactions as well.
How do they work?
Similar to other platforms, such as Facebook Messenger and Slack, WhatsApp will now let you react to messages with a short emoji that reflects your current mood. Instead of tapping on Like or Love, you can pick one of six emoji reactions. So now, if someone sends you an adorable puppy picture and it makes you happy—you can easily show them how much they made your day.
One more thing…
It’s hard to have a conversation without emojis. How often have you used that little smiley face as a way to soften a message? I know I’ve found myself sending out an emoji at least once every day. It’s kind of sad, but it makes me happy, and WhatsApp is smart to give its users what they want: more ways to express themselves on the platform.

The end result?
Sending emoji reactions to your friends is just as easy and fun as sending a heart. You can send them by clicking on a friend’s name, then clicking on their profile picture. From there, you will see two options: Send Message or Send Reaction. Selecting Send Reaction will give you four different reaction options: Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down, Haha and Angry Face. If you want to use an emoji reaction instead of one of these four options, click on More Options in the bottom right corner of your screen. This will open up a drop-down menu where you can select from over 100 different emojis!
How can you use them effectively?
As with most things, moderation is key. The reaction emojis are limited to one per message and you can only react once to each individual message within a conversation (so not everyone will see your reactions). You’ll also need to turn on reactions before they appear in messages, and there are no default reactions; you’ll have to set those up from inside settings.
